The ‘High Coast’ (Map code: 18J NO)
Between Härnösand and Örnsköldsvik at the Bothnian coast of middle Norrland the coastal plain gives way to the hilly type of inland Norrland terrain to reach the sea in a landscape of fjords with steep shores and hilly islands. The Nordingrå district with old settlements and cultivated valleys is well known for its scenic beauty. At the steep mountain Skuleberget, popular among mountaineers, the highest post-glacial shoreline in Sweden has been identified almost 300 m above sea-level. Along the coast a number of old fishing villages, originating from the seasonal fishing practised by people living in Gävle since the 17th century are preserved as cultural heritage. Bönhamn and Ulvöhamn can be mentioned. The Skule forest is a nature reserve for geological reasons. A new bridge across lower Ångermanälven leads the E4 through the heart of the ‘High Coast’ area, the name High Coast having been established by promoters of tourism.
