Acidified and naturally acidic lakes before and after liming 1990
These maps are based on a survey made in the winter of 1990 of just over 4000 lakes chosen at random. A lake whose alkalinity was less than 0,05 mmol/l was judged to be so acid that sensitive animals and plants would not be able to survive there.
The first map is an assessment of how the acidification situation would have been if no liming had been carried out, while the second map shows the actual situation in the lakes sampled in 1990.
The distribution of acidified lakes in Sweden shows great similarity with the distribution of sulphur-fallout. In lime-rich areas, however, there is hardly any acidification.
